Federal Government has started a free compressed natural gas bus service in Abuja to lower the cost of transportation for Nigerians living in the capital.

A video from the Presidential CNG Initiative’s X (formerly Twitter) page claims that the CNG buses started running on December 2, 2024.

According to sources, the buses would travel through popular routes from the outskirts of Abuja, such as Mararaba, to Eagle Square and the Berger bus stop.

The buses will carry passengers for free for the next forty days, according to the administration. There will be no more free bus rides after January 6, 2025.

To lower the excessive cost of transportation in the capital city, the government, acting through the Ministry of Transportation, gave three transport unions 15 buses that ran on compressed natural gas last Monday.

The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, and the National Road Transport Workers Union were among the transport unions who profited from the gift.

Commuters who benefited from the program commended the government’s effort to reduce transportation costs in a video obtained by PUNCH correspondent on Monday.
