The House of Representatives committee is set to probe enlisted ministers over the funds allocated to the development of renewable energy, Cyber reporters report.
Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security; Uche Nnaji, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation; and Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, are among the high-profile government officials expected to testify before the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy Wednesday.
The Committee, chaired by Afam Ogene, a member from the Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, is looking at the use of nearly $2 billion in investment and incentives for the development of renewable energy sources in Nigeria from 2015 to the present.
The committee stated last week that, despite massive donations and investment in the sector, the country’s electricity supply has continued to deteriorate.
The investigation hearing, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, November 5 and 6, 2024, follows the Committee’s June 6, 2024 mandate to investigate Ministries, Departments, and Agencies involved in investments, procurement, and grant receipt for renewable energy sector development.
None of the ministers attended the investigation hearing on Tuesday, instead sending representatives, the majority of whom were instructed to return to their respective offices.
Ogene expressed his unhappiness with the turnout and requested the concerned ministries and other government officials to appear before the Committee every Wednesday.
The Labour Party MP reminded representatives of invited government officials that both chambers of the National Assembly had the authority to summon public personnel for investigation.
