Nigeria’s U-17 Women’s Team, the Flamingos, has been eliminated from the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The team suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the United States in their quarterfinal match.

The match which took place at the CFC Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros on Saturday, saw the American team take revenge for their 2022 quarterfinal loss to Nigeria.

Katharine Fuller opened the scoring with a penalty in the 43rd minute, giving the US a 1-0 lead. This goal marked a turning point in the match.

In the second half, Kimball Ascanio extended the US lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute. Ascanio’s goal secured the victory for the Americans.

Nigeria’s coach, Bankole Olowookere, made two substitutions in the first half. Blessing Ifitezue and Victory Ekezie replaced Peace Effiong and Risikat Azeez.

Despite these changes, the US maintained their superiority. Coach Natalia Astrain’s tactical adjustments paid off.

Nigeria had previously won all their group-stage matches, defeating New Zealand, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. They scored nine goals and conceded only one.

The Flamingos’ elimination marks a disappointing end to their 2024 World Cup campaign.

They had hoped to repeat their 2022 success against the US, but ultimately fell short.
